Trufax, I put off playing XIII for the same reason and by about three hours into it I was sat shaking in front of the TV yelling 'why did the entire internet lie to me, OH MY GOD THIS IS COMPLETELY WONDERFUL.' It's more than brilliant enough to excuse all of its design flaws. If you like vicious deconstruction with your melodrama or melodrama with your vicious reconstruction, play it asap.
